Every year Hindus celebrate Diwali, The Festival of Lights, with a five day festival which begins sometime in mid-October to mid-November. The date of Diwali is always on the 15th day of Ashwin. The purpose of the festival is to rid the world of ignorance and darkness by lighting the way for knowledge. Small oil lamps are lit and placed around homes, mutual and loving hindi phone sex is enacted, sweet breads are eaten and firecrackers are set off as part of the festival which honors Lord Rama, Lakshmi and Kali. Festival-goers also dress in new clothes to commemorate the renewal of life according to the University of California, Los Angeles’ website. Prayers are chanted to remind Hindus that good will triumph over evil and gifts are exchanged between close friends and families as a way to send good wishes.
